(Pre-Recorded, Available On Demand until 9.30.26!)

Please join Kara Schneider & Becca Moore for the September 2026 RECORDED CE!

Many clients enter therapy carrying a quiet but profound grief: the life they imagined did not unfold the way they expected. Whether shaped by trauma, illness, systemic barriers, relationship loss, or simply the unpredictability of life, the gap between “what was supposed to be” and “what is” can feel disorienting and deeply painful. This kind of loss is often invisible: there is no funeral for the career that didn’t happen, the relationship that never formed, or the version of self that no longer feels possible. Yet, clinically, it can function much like other forms of grief, touching identity, purpose, and a person’s sense of future.

For clinicians, these moments can be particularly challenging. There is a natural pull to restore hope quickly, to help clients “find the silver lining,” or to redirect them toward new goals. While well-intentioned, this can unintentionally bypass the necessary work of grieving what has been lost. Sitting with clients in the ambiguity of “what now?” requires tolerance for uncertainty, both theirs and our own. It asks us to resist prematurely constructing meaning on their behalf and instead create space for clients to wrestle with their own narratives, values, and interpretations.

At the heart of this process is meaning-making. Clients are not only adjusting to external changes; they are renegotiating who they are in the context of those changes. The question is no longer just “What do I do next?” but “What does this say about my life, my identity, and my future?” Therapy becomes a space where old assumptions can be examined, rigid narratives softened, and new perspectives cautiously explored. This is not about replacing one dream with another as quickly as possible, but about allowing a more authentic, flexible sense of self to emerge.

Letting go of a dream is not a failure, it is often a necessary turning point. As clients begin to integrate loss rather than avoid it, they create the conditions for new possibilities to take shape. These new dreams may look different than what was originally imagined, but they are often more grounded, more aligned with lived experience, and more resilient. As clinicians, our role is not to hand clients a new dream, but to walk alongside them as they grieve, make meaning, and slowly begin to imagine a future that, while different, can still hold purpose, connection, and hope.

This is a pre-recorded presentation, which you will receive access to once you have registered.
